The commune of Schwangau is located in the south of Germany, near the Austrian border.
These lands were inhabited back in the Mesolithic era. In ancient Roman times, the Via Claudia Augusta trade route passed here.
In the Middle Ages, Schwangau was a trading settlement. Plague 1634-35 destroyed most of the inhabitants of Schwangau. Schwangau is often called the "Swan Village", "the village of royal castles." The settlement is located under a mountain on which Neuschwanstein rises like a fairy tale!
