How to Install and Configure Full VNC Desktop GUI (Graphical User Interface) on Ubuntu 20.04.
In this video, I am going to show you how to install a full desktop (GUI) on Ubuntu server. This is an update tutorial to reflect the changes on ubuntu server 20.04, you’ll set up a VNC server with TightVNC on an Ubuntu 20.04 server and connect to it securely through an SSH tunnel. Then, you’ll use a VNC client program on your local machine to connect with your server through a graphical desktop environment where you can your your browser for internet access.
Ubuntu is a complete desktop Linux operating system, freely available with both community and professional support. The Ubuntu community is built on the ideas enshrined in the Ubuntu Manifesto: that software should be available free of charge, that software tools should be usable by people in their local language and despite any disabilities, and that people should have the freedom to customise and alter their software in whatever way they see fit. "Ubuntu" is an ancient African word, meaning "humanity to others". The Ubuntu distribution brings the spirit of Ubuntu to the software world.
Prerequisites:
1- Ubuntu 20.04 server
2- Username Password
3- Putty
4- VNC
Step 1: Installing the Desktop Environment and VNC Server
sudo apt update
sudo apt install xfce4 xfce4-goodies
sudo apt install tightvncserver
vncserver
vncpasswd (Enter Password)
Step 2 — Configuring the VNC Server
vncserver -kill :1
mv ~/.vnc/xstartup ~/.vnc/xstartup.bak
nano ~/.vnc/xstartup
Then add following lines
#!/bin/bash
xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
startxfce4 &
CTRL+X then press Y then Press Enter
chmod +x ~/.vnc/xstartup
vncserver -localhost
Step 3 — Connecting to the VNC Desktop Securely
ssh -L 59000:localhost:5901 -C -N -l xyz your_server_ip
Find the Connection branch in the tree menu on the left-hand side of the PuTTY Reconfiguration window. Expand the SSH branch and click on Tunnels. On the Options controlling SSH port forwarding screen, enter 59000 as the Source Port and localhost:5901
Then click the Add button, and then the Apply button to implement the tunnel.
Once the tunnel is running, use a VNC client to connect to localhost:59000. You’ll be prompted to authenticate using the password you set in Step 1.
You can access files in your home directory with the file manager or from the command line.
Press CTRL+C in your local terminal to stop the SSH tunnel and return to your prompt. This will disconnect your VNC session as well.
