Extra high voltage substation grounding calculation is one of the most critical calculation in electrical engineering. Generally neutral of EHV system i.e. voltage of and above 66 kV are solidly earthed. It causes huge amount of earth fault current. This earth fault current when returns to the substation ground grid causes huge Ground potential rise which appears at the earthed structures also. But the surface remains at lower potential due to the field effect of the charged conductor. This potential difference becomes fatal for human, so let's see how we can eliminate this hazards.
When an earth fault occurs the entire amount of the fault current doesn't contribute to the ground potential rise. only a certain percentage does.
We can verify that by a zero sequence network diagram.
