Join us as we put the AMD HD 7850, an 11-year-old graphics card with only 2GB of VRAM, to the test in today's gaming landscape. Often referred to as the "PlayStation 4's GPU" it was a card capable of easily hitting 60 FPS: But can it handle modern games in 2023? We'll explore its capabilities in various titles and find out if its aging core and 2GB of GDDR5 VRAM is still sufficient for gaming. Our test system includes an i7 4790, 16GB of RAM, and Windows 10 running on an SSD. Let's see if this old card can still keep up!

Hello everybody and today we're gonna be taking a look at a graphics card commonly referred to as the PlayStation 4’s GPU: the hd 7850. Released back in may of 2012, This was the fastest midrange graphics card of AMD's 7000 series and was once capable of hitting 60 fps in the latest titles. Nowadays modern games don't always run so well, but with the PlayStation 4 turning 10 years old It's time we see how its graphics card has held up.

Now you can't directly compare console hardware to pc components. Consoles combine the central and graphics processing into a custom APU, while most PCs typically keep these separated. So the PS4’s graphics processor was actually based on AMDs mobile GPU the HD 7970m, which was based on their desktop flagship: the 7970. Compared to the desktop card it was clocked 125 MHz slower, had less VRAM, and used an entirely different graphics processor with a much weaker core. The PS4’s was even worse, dialing back clock speeds by 50 more MHz and using the even weaker Liverpool processor. Now down to only 1.8 TFLOPS of theoretical performance, it was a shell of its former self and its performance resembled the mid range 7850. So its not actually the same GPU, but its the most similar in terms of hardware and theoretical performance.

Now I got this card alongside $180 in trade for a 2080, and have been wanting to check it out for a while.
See, the 7000 series was highly successful and introduced the worlds first 28 nm GPU. It also featured 4 different architectures; Terascale 2 and 3 on the low end cards with GCN 1st and 2nd gen on mid and high end models. The PS4’s Liverpool chip used 2nd gen GCN, but the 7850’s Pitcairn processor used 1st gen. GCN stands for Graphics Core Next and was the codename for a series of microarchitectures following Terascale. It went on for 5 generations and was last widely used in AMDs Vega cards, although it does make an appearance in some mobile chips. It also just turned 11 years old so it's time to change the paste.

Now unlike the PS4’s 8gb of system shared memory, the 7850 shipped with either 1 or 2 gigs of gddr5 VRAM. Our GIGABYTE WindForce OC edition fortunately shipped with not only 2 gigs, but also came factory overclocked. The core in question is the Pitcairn pro variant of Pitcairn graphics processor. Running at 975 MHz, the core comes clocked about 13% faster than the reference model, but the memory still runs at reference speeds. T Consisting of 2.8 billion CMOS transistors using TSMC’s 28 nm process the core config comprised of 1280 shading units, 80 texture mapping units, 32 render output units, 20 compute units, 128 z stencils, 2 Asynchronous Compute Engines and 2 Geometry Engines. It might not sound that impressive but did have a 256 bit memory bus, which is better than the RTX 4060 ti. Although this did vary across different models our card features 1 HDMI, 2 Mini DisplayPorts and one dvi video output. With a 130 watt TDP our card it also requires an additional 6 pin connector to supplement the 75 watts from the PCIE lane. It retailed for about 250 Now most 7850s now go for $30 on eBay, but might be a viable choice for a low end system, so let's see how it holds up.
