Epic Games, the developer of the immensely popular video game Fortnite, was slapped with a huge amount of fine from the Federal Trade Commission for violation of some really serious rules.
The game developer was ordered to pay a staggering $520 million for deceiving millions of players into making unintended in-game purchases via a technique known as "Dark patterns" and for breaching the strict Child Online Privacy Protection Act.
Fortnite, a free-to-play game and a money-making powerhouse, rakes in billions from its users' purchases of digital skins for their characters and seasonal "Battle Passes" that furnish them with useful benefits as they continue gaming.
In a statement released by the FTC, it was stated that Epic Games had violated several regulations. Specifically, they stated that due to their counterintuitive button configuration and processes within the game itself, players were often charged unknowingly - even when sleep mode or loading screens were engaged.
