The cause for the Wernicke and Korsakoff syndrome is the lack of vitamin B1, thiamine. Wernicke is characterized by confusion, eye movement disturbances and ataxia, Korsakoff indicates the inability to form new memories. Confabulations are impressive clinical symptoms. Treatment is by thiamine replacement.
