A Spaniard visiting Lake Atitlán, Guatemala
Lake Atitlán is one of the most beautiful lakes in the world, and in Guatemala.
It is a source of life, a means of subsistence for many, as well as an important tourist destination.
In the Nahuatl language, Atitlán means "between waters."
Its formation occurred precisely in a caldera-type volcanic crater.
Currently, the lake has a maximum depth of 340 meters, and beneath its waters lies a Mayan city called Samabaj.
Because of its incredible beauty, it is an essential stop on a trip through Guatemala, and it is one of the most visited sites by tourists in the entire country.
Join me to explore the most beautiful places on this lake.
In this video, I have focused mainly on the town of San Juan La Laguna, in the department of Sololá. There, the community guide Hector offered me a private tour in his tuk-tuk (motorized rickshaw) through the town. San Juan stands out as a town of painters and artists, as well as artisans.
There I visited the Casa del Tejido y Tours, a women weavers' cooperative; the Xunah Kaab stingless bee tour; the "Licor Marrón" chocolate factory; and finally, the Mirador del Cerro de la Cruz viewpoint, where you can see the so-called Mayan Face.
I also visited San Pedro La Laguna, a larger and more touristy place.
The town of departure and return is Panajachel, one of the most significant and important towns on Lake Atitlán.
