That's the exact question this video tries to answer and analyze. spoiler alert, nobody knows why, although there are some compelling hypothesis.
This Video will explore the many pieces of archaic art, from Greek, to Minoan to Etruscan. This video will also explore the history of archaic art and the archaic smile in particular. Many pieces of Art will be looked at and analyzed.
Many civilizations have an "Archaic" period. However, this period in European art is important, if not highly weird and unusual. Take a look at the video and see when the smug Greek archaic smile came into play, and the unusual scenes that it appears in. No matter what the subject of the piece of art..usually a sculpture..is doing, the smile appears.
Death will not slow the smug look of the Archaic period. At the temple of Aphaia you can see the transition between the archaic period and the classical. The temple, as explained in the video, has two scenes, done a decade apart, with very different styles being employed.
The Archaic period ushered in the classic period in Greek art. A style that became the standard for western civilization, this video will explain and give the context around the transition and really analyze the art that made this period so distinctive.
During this period you can see all the tell tale signs of the influences Greek artists incorporated into their art. The Archaic period shows and details when Greeks were influenced by the world, and then transitioned to be the influencers of the world. It's a unique and awesome historical juxtaposition, and we, the beneficiaries of their experimentation, get to enjoy, and wonder why those Greeks had that crazy smile on their faces.
