What is Macroeconomics?
Macroeconomics is the study of the behaviour of the economy as a whole. It focuses on the aggregate variables, such as inflation, unemployment, and economic growth, and how they are affected by changes in monetary and fiscal policy. In this video, we will explore what macroeconomics is, how it is important in our modern world, and what kinds of questions macroeconomists seek to answer. Macroeconomics (often referred to as just macro) is an academic field of study that studies an economy as a whole, with an emphasis on analysing its long-term growth prospects and overall financial health—as well as short-term growth rates. Macroeconomic analysis also focuses on inflation, unemployment, interest rates and monetary policy; these factors are generally easier to measure than microeconomic ones like demand, supply and elasticity—making macro often easier for students to understand at first glance than micro. However, it’s important not to fall into the trap of thinking that simply knowing about nominal GDP or business cycles means you have a firm grasp of macroeconomics...or even enough knowledge to keep up with national economic debates
Why does Any of This Matter?
Macroeconomics is important for understanding how your business impacts everything from wage growth to financial crises, but there’s an abundance of scary-sounding jargon that makes it seem like an insurmountable subject. That’s exactly what led Nobel Prize–winning economist Paul Krugman to famously call economics the most hated (and envied) of all majors. But while we can sympathize with his frustration—it can be tough to understand abstract concepts such as inflation, unemployment and international trade—once you break things down, they aren’t as complicated as they first appear. To paraphrase Professor Krugman: Macroeconomics isn’t hard; it just looks that way at first glance.
