What is the Vanishing Point?
First of all, before I start explaining how we can use the vanishing point in our compositions, it is important that you understand what it is and how it works. Technically, the vanishing point is defined as "the point at which the parallel lines of an image seem to converge and extend to infinity."
What does this mean? In a flat image, be it a photograph, a video or even a painting, our brain perceives the largest objects as closest, and the smallest as far away. That is why the parallel lines, when moving away, seem to come together until converging in a single point, as we can see in the image below. The lines of the image "will be born" in that vanishing point and could extend to infinity, separating more and more.
How to locate the vanishing point correctly
Now that you know what the vanishing point is and what effects we can create with it, it's time to learn where to place it to generate different effects, and to fully exploit this resource:
You can place it in the center, causing the lines to converge towards a central point. In this situation the vanishing point creates a very attractive symmetry, making us perceive the image as very harmonious.
You can place it following the famous rule of the thirds. As we have already mentioned in other articles, the rule of thirds is one of the photographic rules par excellence, so locating the vanishing point along its lines will provide you with a correct and attractive photograph.
You can place it aside, to direct the viewer's gaze. It is incredible the strength that the lines of a photograph have to direct our gaze. Inevitably, we will go through the photograph in the direction in which its lines are drawn. Thus, it can be a very good idea to place the vanishing point on one side, so that your photograph has a different and very attractive look.
In addition, you can include some interesting element in the tour, or at the end of it, so that the viewer's gaze finally lands on that element, which will become the point of interest of your photograph.
You can even place it outside the frame, to create a different effect. A vanishing point outside the frame invites us to imagine where these lines are going. It's like an open ending in a movie, it makes your brain think what else there may be. It is also possible that the vanishing point appears in the frame but other elements or even in the horizon itself do not allow us to see it. It does not have to be an inconvenience, but it will result in a different photograph. For example, it may be interesting that the horizon cut us the vanishing point of a road, to give the feeling that the road is very long.
Finally, remember that the vanishing point does not have to be straight. So, do not obsess about locating straight lines. A vanishing point can appear where you least expect it!
