Due to rising sea temperatures, we've lost 95% of Tasmania's Giant Kelp Forests. To help conserve and restore these forests, Google’s AI tools are being applied to help map giant kelp populations for the first time and identify unique genetic traits that make the surviving kelp heat tolerant. It’s all in partnership with leading experts at @csiro @IMASTas @NatureaustraliaOrgAus @GreatSouthernReef @kelpforestalliance and our geospatial partner, @NGISofficial.
The collaboration is part of Google Australia’s Digital Future Initiative — a $1B investment in Australian research, infrastructure & partnerships.
This material was filmed on lutruwita, near the lands of tukana and wukaluwikiwayna. We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of these lands and their continuing connections to land, sea, culture and community; and pay our respect to their Elders past and present.
