Ryazan | Burned and Unconquered
Ryazan has a long history. It was once a separate Ryazan Principality, located on the southeastern border of Rus', and as a result, it felt the brunt of the Mongol-Tatar invasion first. During the invasion, historic Ryazan was completely burned down, never to be rebuilt, and its name "Ryazan" was later given to Pereyaslavl-Ryazansky. Old Ryazan, however, remains a vast settlement, and only a stone cross commemorates those events.
