Tips for Watching the Noob Pickleball Finals, if you are a fellow Noob:
1. Pickleball is a game to 11 points, win-by-2. Points are scored when the serving team forces the receiving team to double-bounce the ball on the receiving team's court or when the receiving team returns the ball out-of-bounds. Only the serving team has possession of the ball and may score a point.
2. The Score is read as X-X-1 or X-X-2. The X stands for the current score of the teams on the court. 1 denotes the team's first serving player. Once that player has completed an unsuccessful scoring attempt (the receiving team forces the serving team to double-bounce the ball on the serving team's court, if the serving team returns the ball out-of-bounds, or if a serving side player violates a Kitchen Foul), then serve goes to their teammate. The score is then read as X-X-2. Once that player has completed an unsuccessful scoring attempt, the receiving team has successfully 'defended-the-serve' and possession switches sides. The score repeats to X-X-1, and so on. On the first play of the game, the serving side starts with X-X-2.
3. The serving team must serve the ball on the opposite side of the receiving team's court. For example, if the X-X-1 player is on their right-side of the court, then they must serve the ball such that the ball lands on their opponent's right-side of the court. The lines bordering the target zone except for the line closest to the net is in play. If the serve lands outside of the boundaries or on the line closest to the net, then it is an unsuccessful scoring attempt, and it is then a change of possession.
3. The serving player holds possession of the serve until they have committed an unsuccessful scoring attempt. After each successful scoring attempt, the serving team switches sides with their teammate from right-to-left starting at the right-side.
4. Players may not volley (hit the ball prior to a bounce) while in the blocks closest to the net, ie - the Kitchen. If a player volleys while standing in the kitchen or if a player volleys and their momentum causes them to land in the kitchen, then that is a Kitchen Foul and play stops. Points or a change of possession are determined on which team holds the serve.
