VMware Fusion "Server" Build on macOS Big Sur - 6' Networks, LLC
A few weeks ago, we did a video on the installation of VMware ESXi onto a 2013-model Mac Pro "Trashcan" computer. Although the initial build of the ESXi server was a success, that success did not last very long, in fact, it didn't even last a week!
I followed the steps to shutdown all of the VMs and get VMware into the state of where you tell it that you are going down for maintenance and all of the virtual machines are gracefully shut down in order to then shut down the ESXi hypervisor itself.
Well, as life would have it, things changed for me right after I shutdown the server, and I couldn't do the maintenance I had hoped at the last minute. So, I turned the server back on and expected what anyone else would have expected... that was for the ESXi server to power on.
Fast forward about 10 minutes or so, I heard the first of many mysterious startup chimes for the Mac. I wrote it off originally as one of my other Macs in the office doing an update, or just having crashed as I had a few client systems running at the same time. When I returned to the office from the kitchen, I heard it again, this time while I was out in the hall. So, I powered down all of the non-essential Macs in the room, and I followed the sound... and sure enough, like clockwork, it happened again. It was the ESXi server.
At that point I knew I had an issue with the hypervisor and I would need to invest some time down the line to investigate further.
The next day or so, I rand a 20 foot HDMI cable from the ESXi Mac Pro to my display tower at my desk... and low and behold... A whole slew of errors at boot!
Since I didn't have the time to diagnose it, and as of the making of this video, I still haven't diagnosed it, I opted to build something more Mac-admin friendly, and you wouldn't believe it but it works great!
