Ivan Carrillo sees himself first and foremost as a storyteller and general artist. Through his artistic endeavors, Carrillo has been able to express himself and share messages that uplift others via photography, writing, music, and now cinema.
He started his artistic path as a means of venting and an escape from a lonely time in college when many of his close friends had moved away. "It was really expression, because it was at a time when I didn't have a lot of my friends around that I was close with," Carrillo said. Writing, photography, and drawing provide that much-needed outlet for expression.
STORIES THROUGH PHOTOS
Despite gaining expertise in portrait, event, and wedding photography, Carrillo discovered that he was more drawn to a photojournalistic approach that allowed him to capture moving moments and tales. The photojournalism of venerable magazines like National Geographic and The Boston Globe greatly influenced him. "Those moments kind of inspired me in terms of photography," he said. "I wanted to tell more stories with portraiture."
FILMMAKING DREAMS
Driven by a desire to empower others through narrative, Carrillo is embarking on a new chapter in his life as a writer and director as he enters the film industry. "I'm trying to tell stories to inspire people in ways I wish I would have been inspired," he stated. His screenplay "Maria and Louise," which takes the original Mario and Luigi story to an alternate immigrant planet, is one of his favorite passion projects.
Carrillo is still driven despite the difficulties that come with making the transition from solo photography to directing, such as working well with a large team. The industry's support has been beneficial in providing him with resources to get ready for this new journey.
These days, his portraits are full of expressive details, free-flowing movements, and embellishments that reveal aspects of the subject's narrative and personality. Rather than sticking to traditional stances, Carrillo aims to produce artwork that is bursting with meaning and emotion.
What advise would Carrillo give budding artists?
"Follow your heart, follow your passion." He understands that when other people don't think your goal is achievable, there could be resistance and a sense of loneliness when you believe in yourself. He offers comfort, though, saying that "if you feel that way, there's probably at least one other person who feels the same way." Therefore, if you are that person to yourself, chances are good that someone else will find value in what you're producing and will be able to relate to it."
The secret is to never give up, always be willing to work together, and keep your ego in check. "That's when the good times start," Carrillo said. "Because then that's when people become open to collaborate."
Regarding his ideal partners, he aspires to collaborate with performers such as Keanu Reeves or Joseph Gordon-Levitt, not only because of their exceptional storytelling skills but also because of their compelling backstories.
At Ivan Carrillo's core is an embrace of the storytelling role through multidimensional artistic expression. He aspires to leave a lasting legacy in artistic expression by elevating communities and inspiring others along the path.
