Mental Errors You Make That Weaken Your Mental Strength
Our brains can process information at speeds of up to 120 meters per second; however, despite this incredible power, we are constantly subjected to mental errors known as cognitive biases.
Cognitive bias is the tendency to think in illogical ways. We could get lost in scientific jargon, but let's focus on the most common mental errors.
During World War II, researchers examined planes that had returned from missions and proposed adding armor to the most damaged areas.
However, Abraham Wald, a Hungarian statistician, suggested that they add armor to the areas that had little or no damage because only the planes that survived returned.
Where we study successful athletes and entrepreneurs, the survivorship bias is well-known. We listen to their inspirational stories while ignoring the many others who did the same but were never successful.
Focusing on the successful and believing that they know the way to the top is a mistake. We should also study "failures" to avoid repeating the same mistakes.
The bandwagon effect is a common mental error in which the rate of adoption of beliefs or trends increases as more people adopt them.
Though jumping on the bandwagon is not always wrong, it does limit our ability to work and think critically. Furthermore, we are more susceptible to incorrect ideas.
You are a victim of hyperbolic discounting if you have ever chosen a smaller immediate reward over a larger later reward. Many decisions concerning our health, finances, or general well-being are susceptible to this mental error.
Unfortunately, we are hardwired to prefer safe bets. Focus on your future self, and remember that your tomorrow is dependent on what you do today.
Which is more dangerous, driving or flying?
High-profile plane crashes may make one believe that driving is more dependable than flying, but statistics show otherwise.
A car crash has a 1 in 114 chance of killing you, whereas a plane crash has a 1 in 9,821 chance of killing you.
The availability heuristic mental error is a shortcut in which people evaluate a topic by using immediate examples that come to mind.
We tend to value something we remember over other solutions that aren't readily available. As a result, we make ill-advised decisions. Confirmation bias is another common mental error.
The confirmation bias, also known as wishful thinking, is the error that occurs when we prioritize information that confirms a pre-existing belief over information that does not support the theory.
Self-deception is exemplified by confirmation bias. It's like a drug that numbs you to reality. However, you should always look for ways to disprove your hypothesis. That is, look at the world without looking for instances to satisfy your ego.
There are approximately 100 common mental errors. The mistakes listed above are the most common.
Furthermore, even if they weaken your mental fortitude, this does not imply that your mind is broken. The first step toward making better decisions is simply recognizing them.
