the five (or six, or seven) basic tastes - ok science
back in my day, we were taught there were 4 basic tastes: salty, sweet, sour, and bitter. today, we know that savory (or "umami") belongs on that list as well. this video talks about these basic tastes, why they are considered "basic", and what kinds of foods they are normally associated with. the scientific community is also debating two new entries: spicy and fatty, two "tastes" that may end up being our 6th or 7th basic taste.
