Fifty years older than Barcelona, 100 km closer to France, Girona arose at the confluence of four rivers – the Ten, Onyar, Güell, and Galligants – along the famous Roman road, the Via Augusta.
The city, called "Gerunda" by the Romans, subsequently grew steadily and prospered, becoming a center of Jewish scholarship in the Middle Ages.
Girona, perilously close to France, surrounded itself with increasingly powerful and impenetrable defensive walls and was prepared to defend its borders with the utmost determination, earning it the nickname "the city of a thousand sieges." Interestingly, Girona has retained all of its medieval charm virtually intact to this day—and we invite you to enjoy it!
