Annan Altar Stane mapped by Google !
The Altar Stane is a boulder in the Solway Firth south of Annan that has been a boundary marker since medieval times. The stane marks the Parish and Eastern Boundary of the Royal Burgh of Annan as well as defining fishing rights. It is also visited (when possible) during Annan’s Riding of the Marches when all town boundaries are inspected. The Altar Stone is only visible on rare occassions and is usually covered by the shifting sands of the Solway. I came across some pictures of the stane but none had any gps metadata. I noticed that some pictures had background markers and wondered if I could use them to place lines on a map to help estimate the stanes position. The video shows the process I followed with the end result way beyond my expectations !
Why is it called Altar ?
The name Altar may have derived from being the 'outer' boundary stone of Annan.
