Trust Your Ears! Final Devoicing in Russian
Russian spelling is less chaotic than English, but there are a few seeming inconsistencies. Fortunately, there's often a pattern that will help you understand what's going on, and will make your pronunciation in Russian more natural. Just touch your fingers to your throat to find out how.
In this video we'll explore a basic difference between consonant pairs like b/p, g/k, d/t, and others. This will also explain why some Russian surnames are transliterated with -off (Smirnoff!), and others with -ov/-ev (Chekhov).
