Today's topic will discuss what is a computer network. What are the components of a computer network? And what are the types of computer networks?
Computer network: A computer network is a system in which two or more computers are connected together and users can share files, printers, and other services with each other. One device can send messages to another device and one device can run programs on another device.
Here we see many types of network topology which will be discussed in detail later. Different types of topology include ring topology, mesh topology, star topology, fully connected topology, bus topology, tree topology, and lastly line topology.
Network Components: A network basically has three components.
1. Application software.
2. Network software.
3. Network hardware.
Application software is a collection of interface programs through which users can perform shared tasks over a network. The sharing system can be point-to-point or client-to-server.
Network software is a collection of programs that establish rules or protocols for network usage. On the basis of which one device communicates with another device.
Network hardware is the physical device or component that connects multiple devices. Those together are called network hardware. They have 2 important components; one is the signal transmission medium and the other is the network adapter. Transmission is mainly through wire or optical fiber.
A computer network can generally be divided into 4 parts namely-
PAN (Personal Area Network)
LAN (Local Area Network)
MAN (Metropolitan Area Network)
WAN (Wide Area Network)
PAN (Personal Area Network) is a personal technology for short-distance communication with a coverage distance of 30 feet to less than 10 meters. Which is usually done by wireless technology.
LAN (Local Area Network) is one that consists of several devices within the same building. This type of network is very easy to build, and the devices are very cheap. Long's coverage distance ranges from 10 to 100 meters.
MAN (Metropolitan Area Network) is an interface consisting of several LAN located within the same city called MAN. Man's coverage distance ranges from 5 to 50 km.
WAN (Wide Area Network) is a network composed of many LAN, MAN. whose coverage distance is the whole world.
Some other network categories based on distance are BAN (body area network), CAN (campus area network or control area network), and RAN (radio area network or radio access network). A body area network (BAN) consists of a smaller area than a PAN, a campus area network (CAN) consists of a larger area than a LAN with less than a MAN area, and a radio area network (RAN) consists of a larger area than a MAN but smaller than a WAN area.
