How Do Night Vision Devices Work? Technologies and Misconceptions.
We're testing night vision devices, image intensifiers, and thermal imaging cameras. What is infrared? We'll examine the three fundamental technologies of night vision devices: (1) active infrared (analog with image intensifier tube and digital), (2) image intensifiers, and (3) thermal imaging cameras. What exactly is the difference between infrared (IR, NIR) and thermal radiation? What's inside night vision goggles (NVGs)? Why do cats see better in the dark than humans? We'll address common myths and misconceptions. Finally, we'll take all the devices on a moonlit expedition into the woods. Our test includes night vision devices from Yukon and Dörr, and a thermal imaging camera from SeeK. We'll also bring along a modern digital camera, a Sony Alpha 7C, which provides some surprises.
