Normalization of steel, compared to annealing, is a shorter heat treatment process and, therefore, more productive. After normalization, alloys acquire a fine-grained structure and somewhat greater strength and hardness than after annealing.
During normalization, carbon steel is heated 30-50 °C above the GSE line, maintained at this temperature and cooled in still air.
Normalization is used to correct the coarse-grained structure of steel, improve machinability and structure before hardening.
In hypereutectoid steels, normalization eliminates the secondary cementite network along the boundaries of pearlite grains.
Normalization can also be the final heat treatment, for example, for rolled products.
