American composer Henry Cowell once noted that “Rhythm is a conception, not a physical reality. It is true that, to be realized in music, rhythm must be marked by some sort of sound, but this sound is not itself the rhythm.” This statement, if one accepts it as true, is a powerful tool and should be utilized in the process of music composition.

The illusion is part of the charm.

Yidaki at the River is a piece conceived for Yucca didgeridoo, local birds, flora and fauna, random cars, trucks, and people. It is a reflection on the concept of rhythm and utilizes a call and response process between the didgeridoo and birds. The cars, people, flora and fauna, the environment, provides spectacular counterpoint.
