In general, memory or random access memory (RAM) is a limited resource in a system. Virtual memory is a mechanism to enlarge the memory space of a system beyond the hardware limitations by enlarging the address space virtually. At times, virtual memory can contain as many as twice the number of addresses available in main memory.
