Every Monday morning, the researchers assisting with the GSO Fish Trawl meet at Wickford Shipyard, boarding URI’s research vessel, the RV Cap’n Bert, to carry on a scientific tradition that began in 1959. With over 65 years of sampling data, the Narragansett Bay Fish Trawl Survey is one of the longest-running studies of bottom fish and invertebrate populations in the world.
Jeremy Collie's lab has managed the Fish Trawl since 1998, sending students to sample two locations—Fox Island and Whale Rock—where they track changes in the Bay's ecosystem. Beyond counting fish, they collect vital data on temperature, salinity, and oxygen levels, offering insight into the long-term health of our waters.
