This presentation is a comprehensive review of gender diversity and gender dysphoria, as it pertains to the diagnostic criteria, including a review of current, as well as obsolete, terminology, and including the history of both homosexuality and gender dysphoria as mental conditions, according to the American Psychiatric Association, and why one was removed from the diagnostic manual and the other renamed various times, but retained.
The diagnostic criteria for both children as well as adolescents and adults are reviewed and expounded upon, and this is followed by a discussion of transphobia and non-binaryphobia from a personal perspective. Throughout the video I interject my own experience growing up gay in the 1970s and 1980s, and my own experiences violating societal expectations regarding stereotypical gender behavior (though I myself identify as male). And yet, despite this personal history, how I realized and admitted to myself that I was not entirely free of xenophobia when I first became aware of transgender individuals.
Over time I have come to realize that prejudice itself is on a spectrum: neither black, nor white, but given to a range of manifestations and intensities. We should all examine ourselves for these traces of discomfort, and for automatic thoughts and ways of expressing ourselves and interacting with others that are biased, albeit unwittingly. The best of intentions are insufficient when our conduct harms others.
I hope you enjoy this discussion, and I hope it gives viewers food for thought. Comments are always welcome.
