The Diocese of Leeds Schools Singing Programme is recognised as the UK’s leading Catholic singing provision. The programme reaches around 6,500 children across the Diocese every week in over 150 choral groups both during and outside the school day, including boys’ and girls’ choirs in Bradford, Harrogate, Huddersfield, Keighley, Pontefract, Ripon, Wakefield and Skipton, together with the choirs of Leeds Cathedral. Our Keyboard Studies Programme complements the singing sessions by providing the opportunity to learn a keyboard instrument to a further 1,500 children each week through whole-class melodica tuition and accordion, piano and organ lessons. The Catholic Faith is at the heart of our provision; lifting voices together to God, we evangelise, teach and deepen the children’s faith by singing the rich heritage of Catholic sacred music. The Diocese of Leeds model has led to the creation of the National Schools Singing Programme, which currently works with over 27,000 children in the UK across 35 dioceses and cathedrals in the UK.
Leeds Cathedral Choir draws its membership from our whole- class sessions in Catholic state schools across the city. Its seven choirs – for children aged 5 to 18 – sing for the daily Masses and
liturgies at the Cathedral, broadcast regularly on national BBC radio and television, have made numerous commercial recordings, and participate in tours, concerts and projects with internationally-renowned choral groups including Gabrieli and The Sixteen.
