A Japanese proverb behind the Farfetch’d → Sirfetch’d evolution
The Japanese name of the pokemon Farfetch’d is カモネギ Kamonegi, which literally means “Duck Leek.”
The name is based on the Japanese proverb:
カモがネギを背負って来る
Kamo ga negi wo shotte kuru
which means, “A duck flies in with a leek.”
If you order any dish with duck meat at a Japanese restaurant, it will always come with chopped leek, simply because they go so well together.
So if a duck came flying in with a leek on its back, it’s too good to be true, therefore the name, “Farfetch’d.”
When Farfetch’d evolves, it turns into Sirfetch’d. The Japanese name for this pokemon is ネギガナイト Negiganaito because first of all it’s a knight, and second because it’s a pun for ネギが無いと Negiganaito, which means “We need to have the leek 😂!”
