If you’re meeting someone somewhere in Shinjuku Station, and you accidentally went out from the wrong gate, you might as well go home. Everyone will be happier that way.
When I was a teenager, I had a job interview in the east side of Shinjuku Station but I went out of the West Gate because I was a teenager. We were still developing a brain at all. By the time I got to the east side, the sun went down.
This was way before smartphones. Now, we got a digital map, but Shinjuku Station has also doubled the number of exits since then. I feel a conscious effort to challenge technology.
The station constantly has some construction going on inside, so paths that existed the last time you were there? Not there anymore. You know those games with dungeons that change shape each time you go in? That’s not fiction.
It’s like a Japanese proverb, 一期一会 Each encounter, a fleeting moment.
