subtle animation is very challenging and tricky to say the least. Managing small, micro movements & milking tangents can be a nightmare, so I take my time when shooting reference . I then choose the best footage that will guide me safely . It forces me to levelup my acting as well. These shots were very complicated and called for reinforcements in form of highly skilled animator Kira Lehtomaki (currently Head of Animation on wreckitralph2 ). Apparently, it was blue flannel day at work & we were the only ones that got the memo
We were discovering Elsa's hand rubbing together as a character-specific gesture whenever she's uncomfortable or to display her struggle to maintain her powers. I channeled my mom for Elsa's performance. Whenever I got in trouble as a kid, she'd stare me down w a stern, wide-eyed expression, aggressive neck extensions and head bobs, and yelled out my full name.. "Minor JOSE!!" I'd either get scolded w Spanish curses or some oldfashioned discipline ( cinturon , chancleta , ganchoderopa , etc..whatever was closest) I learned quickly not to make bad decisions.. often.
