Yubari melon is the legend. When you think of the most expensive fruit of all time, Yubari melon of Japan takes the 1st spot in many people’s mind. Recently in 2020, a pair of yubari melon was sold for 2.7 million yen (about 25,000 USD) during the first auction of Sapporo Central Wholesale Market in Hokkaido. Safe to say, no fruit, however delicious, should cost that much. However, it goes to show that Japan treats their fruits—especially melons and strawberries—like jewelry. Its value is not only appreciated in flavor but also in its material form and amount of time being put to raise the most beautifully looking and the most delicious tasting melon. The best version of its own kind.
However, that doesn’t mean all yubari melons are crazily expensive and unaffordable. Like anything else, there are different grade. I have lived in Japan for over 7 years and I have never purchased and tried yubari melon before. Today, I saw one showed up in a supermarket and it only costs 1,780 yen (I know, we’re playing fast and loose with the word “only” here). So, I decided to buy it (cha-ching!) and cut it open in this video.
To be fair, melons in Japan are very affordable and delicious. Every summer, I would buy those green and red melons that cost 760 yen ($7.5) and I never imaged there would be the more delicious version of these melons. To really compare the difference, I bought some normal melons (large green melon and cantaloup) as well. We shall see if the legend is true. (Spoiler: It’s true).
