It all began in 1817, when Dom João II decided to light the streets of Rio de Janeiro.
To this end, he created a lighting tax, paid by all the provinces.
But the other provincial cities lived in total darkness.
In fact, Pernambuco paid for Rio de Janeiro's police, Rio de Janeiro's electricity, and even important construction projects in the state.
