DIAMANTINO CITY MATO GROSSO
Diamantino is a Brazilian municipality in the state of Mato Grosso. It is located at an altitude of 269 meters. Its estimated population in 2004 was 19,903 inhabitants, with an area of 7,764.43 km². Currently, it has 21,941 inhabitants (IBGE 2021).
The explorer Gabriel Antunes Maciel discovered a diamond-bearing stream in the region in 1728, and then founded the settlement of Alto Paraguai on its banks, which later became known as Diamantino. The settlement became a town by royal decree on November 23, 1820.
The South American pole of inaccessibility is located above the municipality, at -14.05 degrees latitude and -56.85 degrees longitude.
Among its natives, the most notable are Admiral João Batista das Neves, followed by Judge Joaquim Pereira Ferreira Mendes, grandfather of Minister Gilmar Ferreira Mendes, former president of the Supreme Federal Court, brother of the previous mayor, and Judge Ítalo Fioravanti Sabo Mendes of the Federal Regional Court of the 1st Region.
