The media and many radical groups have been slamming this flag in recent years, but what is the real history and meaning behind the Gadsden flag?
This bright yellow flag is easy to spot and is displayed by many Americans all over the US.
Some fly it for political reasons, while most simply hold to its original, historical meaning.
Back in 1775 during the American Revolution, the rattlesnake was already being used as a symbol of the original colonies segmented into pieces as in the “Join or Die” cartoon by Benjamin Franklin.
On the other hand, the Gadsden flag was designed as a single rattlesnake, depicting the colonies as one entity.
One of the first records we have of the Gadsden symbol is a letter to the Pennsylvania Journal written by Benjamin Franklin himself.
He wrote, “I observed on one of the drums belonging to the marines now raising, there was painted a Rattle-Snake, with this modest motto under it, 'Don't tread on me.’”
Franklin went on to interpret this motto in light of the characteristics of the rattlesnake:
A rattlesnake’s eyelids never close; they are always on the watch for food and predators.
In the same way, the colonists were to be vigilant against encroachments of freedom and their natural rights.
A rattlesnake never attacks first; it waits for its opponent to make the first move,
then makes a small but deadly wound. Once a rattlesnake begins to fight, it never surrenders.
A rattlesnake never wounds without warning its enemy of the dangers of treading on it with the sound of its signature rattle.
Franklin counted the rattle and found that there were exactly 13 parts to it, all working together to create the noise.
“By breaking them into pieces,” he said, “one of those rattles simply is incapable of producing sound but the ringing of thirteen together is sufficient to alarm the boldest man living.”
The final design of the flag is credited to Christopher Gadsden in 1775 and was immediately popular among the Continental Marines who adopted it as their own.
Gadsden also presented the flag and had it recorded in the journals of the Congress of South Carolina in Charleston.
It later flew above the ship Alfred and many other American naval ships that accomplished daring missions against the British.
In the end, though time and controversy have tried to change it, the Gadsden flag still represents what it did at the founding of our nation:
