Many VFDs offer an input power monitoring feature to protect the drive, the motor, and the machine system from voltage spikes and sagging mains. This video discusses the incoming voltage issues that can cause damage if not mitigated. Initiating an error to shut down in the event of a voltage spike or, in the case of power loss, use the lower power from an uninterruptable power supply (UPS), to bring a machine motor to a safe position are a couple of the ways a VFD can prevent damage to itself or a machine system.
