Women not only face the infamous glass ceiling as they move up in the ranks. They are further encircled by glass walls, making it challenging for them to enter more profitable, traditionally male-dominated sectors. Some of the many push-and-pull factors holding women back from entering male-dominated sectors include unconscious biases, societal norms, lack of exposure to these sectors, time, and capital constraints. Yet, very little research exists to identify the factors that support women to enter such sectors. On February 10, we will launch a new World Bank report and host a conversation among practitioners and experts on sectoral choice as one of the contributors to gender gaps in firm performance. Panelists will share their views on the factors preventing women from entering more profitable male-dominated sectors and discuss evidence-based policies and programs to help them cross over into these sectors.
