A series dedicated to helping your improve your lighting as an individual photographer, director, or DP. Learn from my 12 years of experience in shooting and directing music videos.

Today's lesson focusing on Improving your Flat lighitng. Shadows are your friend so don't forget to include them in your shot. Here are some quick tips on how to do that.

Your lighting sucks because
"Its Flat which means you don’t have shadows"
1) Create more drama as you pull your light around the subject. Don't put your light directly infront but start at 45 degrees and move it around to create more drama.
2) Shoot shadow side of the subject, put the camera on the side of the shadow.
3) Reduce your fill light or Use Negative Fill by using black sheets or solids on set.
4) Don’t forget your edge light or backlight. This can usually be at least one stop over your key light.
