In the 20th century, Venice aimed to embrace modernity, yet it was the Lagoon that bore the consequences. Starting in 1917, the establishment of an industrial area and roads to the airport encroached upon one-tenth of the Lagoon's surface area. To meet industry demands, approximately 8,000 wells were excavated to extract water from the water table just beneath Venice's foundations. The result was a subsidence of Venice by 15 cm within a mere 30 years.
The Lagoon, subjected to such mistreatment, eventually exacted a form of retribution on the Venetians, and the city itself paid the price. With ground subsidence, rising water levels, and waves from motorboats, Venice finds itself under threat from all sides. Will it prevail ?
