We went into the mission with silent running, and deployed the towed array. We're heading east, under the ice, and we are detecting... TWO contacts to the east, under 20 km?! We turned north, found an iceberg to hide behind, and launched 2 Mk48s around the iceberg, along with a decoy.
Decoy got one of their counter-fire torpedoes, the other missed behind us. We did detect the other escort, a Sierra class (the other is a Victor III). We kept our two torpedoes on the Typhoon, and eventually got BOTH to hit the Typhoon, but she's a big girl... didn't sink her... she did have to execute an emergency blow, though. Can she reach the surface?
She did eventually reach the surface, but only with her bow. She had to assume a 30 degree up-bubble attitude and keep at 25 kt, and just kept "hovering" there...
I tried lobbing 3 Harpoon missiles at it, but she's not far enough out of the water for Harpoons to lock on. All three just slashed into the sea. I sent a torpedo instead.
Before my torpedo could arrive, the Typhoon ran out of ocean... as her 25 kt nose-up trip ran her into an icefloe. She took herself back down, tried to nose up again, but there's not enough buoyancy. She imploded 2 minutes later, unable to stop her descent, and crashed into the sea bottom.
Was able to put two torpedoes on the Victor III, one of which got her. Decided Sierra is too fast and too alerted, and disengaged.
