Tuning SQL Server :- Understanding the data we are going to work with
A challenge for me when conducting trainings is often how perfect the AdventureWorks database is. It doesn't reflect the real bad design decisions that I encounter in the real world as a consultant. Often participants are able to understand how a feature works by comparing the before versus after picture of the way things used to be done. In order to facilitate this I have created a database which simulates a booking website for a travel agency. The website has users who can search for flights and book them just like you would on any retail website. This gives me a database that can be used for both transaction processing as well as reporting. And with a healthy mix of insert updates deletes and select we will encounter common scenarios such as locking blocking and deadlocks. Ask the number of uses increase we should also see other issues such as memory and CPU utilization etc.
