Biodiversity is the total number of species in a given area. A full set of species means that an area has a functioning ecosystem that provides innumerable benefits to humans from medicine to tourism to poetry and music. Protecting biodiversity means protecting species, and that is why it is worth going to significant lengths to keep endangered species from going extinct.
