GD: Welita, why does your foot smell so bad?
GM: It's just a sore there.
GD: Can I see it?
GM: I don’t want anyone to see it.
GD: PLEASE, Welita. I’ve been reading about diabetes, and how important it is to see your doctor when you get a sore that doesn’t heal.
GM: Well OK, help me take the bandage off
GD: Oh Lita, how long has this been like this?
GM: It’s been a long time but it doesn’t hurt at all.
GD: When you are a diabetic your feet can go numb.
GD: At school, they were talking about a free clinic - let’s get you tested!
Doc: Well, Welita, this wound looks pretty bad.
Doc: Let’s check your blood sugar.
GM: Sure, but I don’t feel sick…
Doc: You may not feel sick from diabetes because you are so used to it.
Doc: Hmm
Doc: your blood sugar is over 300.
Doc: You may need some medication,
Doc: increased activity, very close follow-ups, and a diet.
Doc: Also, you have some redness around the wound,
Doc: which indicates the infection, so we’d better start antibiotics.
Doc: Now, please, close your eyes and tell me which toe I’m touching.
GM: I don’t feel anything yet…
Doc: Now, let’s check the pulse in your foot.
Doc: Great – you have excellent pulses!
Doc: Okay, Welita, first, you’ll need to clean the wound every day and cover it, as well as take the medicines.
Doc: Second, you should buy well-padded, spacious tennis shoes.
Doc: Third, I’d like you to meet with the diabetes nurse, so you can start your diet to improve your blood sugar with less medication
Doc: And I'd like to see you again in 2 weeks.
Maria’s thoughts (voice-over):
They're not teaching us wound healing science or treatment.
I plan to change this; we must train medical students early to adopt best practices alongside emerging technologies and AI tools.
Maria (adult): Your wound hasn't improved with current treatments, and we need advanced diagnostics to understand it better. I'm involved in a research project that could provide individualized care, and I'd like to include you if you're willing.
