As such, the first formal institution for training early years educators, then called nannies, were established around this period. Norland College opened in 1911 and Wellgarth Nursery Training School in 1923. The National Nursery Examination Board was established by the Ministry of Health in 1945, with the NNEB diploma seen as the gold standard for early years educators. The course was rigorous and took two years to complete with a mix of placement time, research, and coursework. And it held prestige! Seven years later, in 1985, you could start a BTEC National Certificate or Diploma in childcare and 5 or so years after that, you could start an NVQ in the early years. Finally, by 1993, if you studied hard you could progress to a degree in early childhood studies and 20 years later, in 2013, the Early Years Teacher Status was launched. And today, there are currently 84 different courses and qualifications that count as full and relevant.
