Q3: One thing Alexander S. said about this film, which I found fascinating, was that atheists and agnostics didn’t exist in this culture at this time. And this film is full of spirituality. What did you think of that as it pertains to this story?
JAY'S NOTES:
I loved it.
I loved it for two reasons: It resonates with spiritual people… and it resonates with atheists.
Why? Because it’s a reflection, in part, of how spirituality is experienced by everyone.
Atheists and agnostics will say: “Look at the madness of spirituality that drives religious zealots.”
Spiritual people will say: “Look at how influential and important spirituality is to the lives of these characters.”
Which means that Eggers does care about this issue, and I appreciate the way he does.
