The Story of the Padukas under the Neem Tree
Akkalkot Maharaj A devotee of Shri Swami Samarth Bhai Krishnaji Alibagkar worshipped the picture of Akkalkot Maharaj. He once thought of going to Akkalkot in Solapur district to see the Padukas of Maharaj and worship him with a true heart; but before going there he had a dream at night. Akkalkot Maharaj appeared to him and said - "Now Shirdi is my resting place, you go there and worship me." So Bhai changed his mind and came to Shirdi, worshipped Baba, stayed there for six months and remained happy. In memory of this miracle he prepared the Padukas and installed them under a Neem tree on an auspicious day in 1912 by Dada Kelkar and Upasani Maharaj. A initiated Brahmin was appointed to perform the worship and its management was handed over to a Saguna Bhakt. This story is written in Sai Charitra Chapter 5
And the full account of this story was written in Shri Sai Leela Magazine by Shri B.V. Dev, a retired Mamlatdar of Thane and a great devotee of Sai Baba, in this manner. Dev investigated the matter with Sagun Meru Naik and Govind Kamalakar Dixit, and they have published a full account of the Padukas in Sai Leela Volume. Sai Leela Volume 11, No. 1, Page No. 25. It says, In the year 1834 (1912) Ramrao Kothare, a doctor from Mumbai came to Shirdi to see Baba. His compounder; and his friend Bhai Krishnaji Alibagkar also accompanied him. The compounder and the Bhai became very close to Sagun Meru Naik and GK Dixit. While talking with them these persons thought that there should be a memorial of Sai Baba's first visit to Shirdi and sitting under the sacred Neem tree. He thought of placing Baba's Charan Paduka there and was going to make it with some rough stones. Then bhai's friend the compounder suggested that the matter should be discussed with his Guru Dr. Ramrao Kothare who would make good Padukas for the same. Everybody liked the proposal and informed Dr. Kothare about it. He came to Shirdi and planned the Padukas. He went to Upasani Maharaj in Khandobaji's temple and told him his plan. The latter i.e. Upasani Maharaj made many improvements in it, made lotus, flower, conch, chakra, man etc. and suggested that the following Shloka should be composed on the greatness of Neem and Baba's Yogic powers.
Upasani's suggestions were accepted and implemented. The Padukas were made in Mumbai and sent to Shirdi with compounders. Baba said that the Padukas should be installed on Shravan Poornima. That day at 11 a.m. G.K. Dixit brought the Padukas on his head and took out a procession from Khandobaji's temple to Dwarkamai (mosque). Saying "These are the Lord's feet", Baba touched the Padukas and asked people to install them under a Neem tree. A day before that, a Parsi devotee named Pasta Shet of Mumbai sent Rs. 25 through money order. Baba gave this amount for the installation of the Padukas. The total cost of installation came to Rs. 100, out of which Rs. 75 was collected through donations. First 5 Years G.K. Dixit performed the Paduka Puja everyday and later Laxman Kacheshwar Jakhadi performed the Puja. In the first five years Dr. Kothare ji also sent Rs. 2 per month for lighting and a railing around the Paduka. Sagun Meru Naik also gave Rs. 7.50 paise for bringing the railing and roof from the station to Shirdi. Later, Jakhadi (Nana Pujari) performed the Puja and Sagun Meru Naik offered naivedya and lit the lamps in the evening. The shloka written by Upasani Maharaj ji on it is as follows
"Sada nimbavrksasya muladhivasat sudhastravinam titka mapya priyam tam.
Tarun kalpavrksadhikam sadhayantam, namamisvaram sadgurum sainatham."
