Deep Dive: What Makes Design Good for Health?

Designers are thinking more deeply than ever about the health outcomes that can emerge from buildings, products, and entire systems. Better training, multi-disciplinary teams, and new technologies are fueling greater insights about the integral role that design can play in health. From low-cost prosthetic limbs for people in resource-limited settings to better-ventilated hospitals that let in natural light, the concept of human-centered or patient-centered design is taking hold. But what distinguishes good design from the rest? Why does good design even matter, and what characteristics define it? Given design’s unique ability not just to heal, but to dignify, how can we ensure that all design is human-centered?
