The Cờn Temple Festival is one of the oldest festivals in Nghe An province. According to historical documents, the Cờn Temple was granted a royal decree and sponsored for restoration and worship by the feudal state starting from the time of Tran Anh Tong (1312)[1] and has existed until today for more than 800 years.
Historically, the Cờn Temple Festival was given great attention by the feudal dynasties and was listed as an "international" festival. In addition to being passed down through folklore, the Cờn Temple Festival was also recorded in documents, inscribed on stone tablets with detailed regulations and specific terms, forming an unchangeable convention that the villagers had to comply with.
Previously, the Cờn Temple Festival lasted for one month, starting from the twelfth month of the previous year and ending in the first month of the following year. From the 15th to the 21st of January was considered the main period of the festival, and the main ceremony was concentrated on the 20th and 21st of January. The festival features a variety of activities, with both ceremonial and celebratory elements interwoven. The most distinctive aspect is the "running and vomiting" ritual, linked to the legend of the sacred log. Festival activities take place from the morning of the 20th to the evening of the 21st of the first lunar month, including folk games such as wrestling, cockfighting, card games (human chess), pot smashing, stick pushing, Chau Van singing, traditional opera, and food. The festival is primarily held in the area of the Inner and Outer Cờn Temples in Quỳnh Phương ward, Hoàng Mai town, and also involves several coastal communes such as Quỳnh Dị, Quỳnh Lập, Quỳnh Liên (Hoàng Mai town) and Quỳnh Lương (Quỳnh Lưu district) – home to the Quy Lĩnh Temple, a temple associated with the "running and vomiting" ritual in the ancient Cờn Temple festival.
