Starting A Tech Career (DOs and Don'ts)
Avoiding the mistakes I made in tech!!!
Back then in school when my mates were coding I was unconcerned because I had the mindset that tech is too hard and that only a chosen few can do it.
So I went through school without focusing on anything except trying my best to get good grades to get a good-paying job after school.
Then after school life happened and the only people who seemed to have it better were those guys who were tech-driven in school.
First, we were all invited to interview and only the tech-savvy guys were employed.
Imagine getting a job even before NYSC. I guess this should have been enough motivation to start tech but I felt I stood a chance of getting a job in my field, after all, everybody cannot be into tech.
Fast forward one or two years later, while my tech friends were advancing in their careers, changing jobs, and moving from the 150k-200k initial salary they were offered during the first job interview to over 10 million annual salary in just 2 years after graduation, I was yet to start my career as a power engineer.
All I can say is ‘I GUESS NIGERIA HAPPENED TO ME’
It was easy to blame it on Nigeria, but the truth is, I had the opportunity to learn this tech earlier but was just too lazy to start.
Whatever excuse I gave myself back then was because I was too lazy to start.
The thing is, if you have a laptop, what is really stopping you from starting somewhere?
Are you looking for a get-rich-quick scheme that never comes? Or shouldn’t you rather start now to build your career?
Yes, indeed, it’s never too late to start a new career but the mistake I made in tech was not starting early enough!!!
