In 1998, Chrysler was trying to boost their sales, which was proving to be difficult among some of its competitors, Mercury Mystique, Honda Civic and Nissan Altima. Many car enthusiasts believed that the '98 Chrysler Cirrus design moved the car in the direction of  standard equipment especially in the LXi model, which now meant, there was "no longer an option for the thrifty." However, some critics believed that a lot of the "goodies" that were  standard on the Chrysler Cirrus, such as cruise control, the spacious interior, which automotive buffs described as "cab-forward,"  meaning tons of passenger space.
